Paul Gludovatz was born on January 5, 1946, in Graz, Austria. He was a professional football player and later became a well-known football coach.
Gludovatz began his playing career at SK Styria Graz and later moved on to join LASK Linz. He played as a defender and had a successful playing career in Austria's top-flight league.
After retiring as a player, Gludovatz moved into coaching. He gained recognition as the head coach of FC Puch, where he achieved promotion to the Austrian Regional League. This success led to his appointment as the head coach of Sturm Graz in 1998.
During his time at Sturm Graz, Gludovatz guided the team to success in the Austrian Bundesliga, winning the championship in the 1998-1999 season. He also led Sturm Graz to the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time in the club's history.
Gludovatz had coaching stints at several Austrian clubs, including Sturm Graz, FC Wacker Innsbruck, SV Josko Ried, and FK Austria Vienna. Additionally, he had experience coaching internationally, working as an assistant coach for the Austria national team under manager Morten Olsen.
His coaching style was known for promoting disciplined and organized play, focusing on strong defensive formations. Gludovatz was respected for his tactical knowledge and ability to bring out the best in his players.
Outside of football, Gludovatz was also a trained teacher and had a degree in physical education. He was involved in various educational projects aimed at developing young players and promoting the sport in Austria.
Paul Gludovatz retired from coaching in 2015 but continued to be involved in football as a pundit and commentator. He passed away on March 21, 2021, at the age of 75.
